Carl Brown
Carl is a fiber artist who has been sewing and quilting for approximately seven years. Like many artists working in fiber, he began with traditional quilt patterns before moving toward increasingly complex abstract and improvisational work based on his own designs.
His practice is driven by a deep fascination with color and shape, with a particular love for curved, improvisational forms.
Carl works using a range of techniques, including improv quilting, appliqué, and both domestic machine and long-arm quilting.

I Rise
Size: 57'' x 40''
This fiber art piece is inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise.”
Angelou’s poem celebrates strength, resilience, and the ability to rise above hardship and injustice. She reminds us that no matter how others lie, hate, or try to break us, we can always rise.
The bottom of the quilt represents the “black ocean”. Above the ocean, the artwork bursts with color, texture, and movement, symbolizing beauty, pride, and the unstoppable spirit of rising.
Viewers may see the moon, the sun, air, and joy — all symbols of renewal and triumph that echo Angelou’s empowering message of hope and endurance.
